How do I continue a long project in a new chat without losing context?
Ask for a summary of decisions, their reasons, the current status and the next step. Check it, save a copy outside the chat and paste it into the new one. If the old chat no longer accepts messages, use what you can read. Do not assume memory will transfer everything.
How to move the work into the new chat
Prepare the summary before switching
If you can still send messages in the old chat, ask it for a summary to continue elsewhere. If it no longer accepts messages, prepare it yourself from the messages you can read and your documents.
“Prepare a summary so I can resume this project in a new chat. Include decisions and why we made them, the current status, the next step and the source of each important fact. Flag anything you cannot verify.”
Check what must be preserved
Check decisions and their reasons against the chat or original documents. Correct anything missing or wrong. An AI-written summary may leave out something important.
Save a copy and take it to the new chat
Paste the summary at the start or keep the document in the Project where you will work. Do not rely solely on the AI remembering earlier work.
Check the starting point
Before continuing, ask the new chat to tell you which decisions it must respect and what the next step is. Correct any differences from your summary.
A template for keeping the work status
Fill in these sections and update them when you finish working:
- Decisions: what we agreed and why.
- Current status: where the work stands.
- Next step: where to continue.
- Sources: which message or document supports each important fact.
Which method to choose
- Pasted summary: to resume work in another chat, including when switching from ChatGPT to Claude. Check the content before using it.
- Project: to group a piece of work’s chats, files and instructions in ChatGPT or Claude. Keep the status document there. What it can retrieve from other chats depends on the app and memory settings.
- The AI’s memory: for preferences and facts you want to reuse across chats. Do not use it as the only copy of a project’s detailed status.
- External memory: to save decisions with their source and look them up from assistants you connect. MemoryBrain supports this in ChatGPT and Claude.
Why opening another chat is not enough
The context window is what the AI can use to answer at that moment, and it has a limit. The cited threads report problems continuing long conversations. Opening a new chat does not guarantee that every earlier decision will transfer.
A summary helps preserve the essentials, but you should check it. Project files and memory can provide context depending on the app and its settings.

Frequently asked questions
Can I paste the whole chat into the new one?
You can copy it, but it will use context from the start. To resume work, use a checked summary with decisions, reasons, status and sources.
Do Projects keep the previous conversation?
A Project groups chats, files and instructions. What the new chat can retrieve from earlier conversations depends on the app and memory settings. Keep a document with the work status.
What if I use both ChatGPT and Claude?
You can paste the same checked summary into either app. Projects belong to each app. An external memory connected to both lets you consult the same notes.
