Can ChatGPT and Claude share the same memory?
Yes. ChatGPT and Claude don't share their memories with each other, but both can connect to an external memory. With MemoryBrain you add the same brain to both as a remote MCP connector, and what you save from one, the other can read, with the source of every note. It takes a few minutes and there is nothing to install.
What you need
- A MemoryBrain account. It is in private beta: your email has to be approved from the waitlist.
- Claude on the web. According to Anthropic's help center, every plan supports custom connectors; the Free plan allows one.
- ChatGPT on the web, on a paid plan. In our tests it took Plus or Pro.
- The connector URL, the same for both:
https://app.memorybrain.ai/mcpHow to connect it
-
Add MemoryBrain to Claude
Open Customize › Connectors, click + Add and choose Add custom connector. Enter the name MemoryBrain and paste the URL. Leave authentication on sign-in: no client ID or secret is needed, the connector registers itself.
When you click Add, the MemoryBrain screen opens. Enter your email and the 6-digit code you receive.
To use it in a conversation: the + button at the bottom left › Connectors › turn MemoryBrain on. If you add it on the web, it also shows up in the Claude iPhone app.
-
Add MemoryBrain to ChatGPT
On the web, open chatgpt.com/plugins, click + and choose Add custom MCP server. Enter the name, paste the same URL and choose OAuth. Accept the risk warning, click Create as a plugin and install it.
Sign in with the same email you used in Claude. That way both assistants read and write the same brain.
To use it: in a new chat, type
@and pick MemoryBrain.OpenAI has moved this menu several times. Until recently it lived under Settings › Apps & Connectors › Advanced › Developer mode › Create. If your account still shows that path, the fields are the same.
-
Check that they share memory
In Claude, with MemoryBrain on:
“Save to my brain that I like summaries with the decision first and the context after.”
Then, in a new ChatGPT chat with
@MemoryBrain:“How do I like my summaries? Tell me where you got that from.”
It should answer with what you saved in Claude and tell you it comes from something you said, with the date.
What to ask once it is connected
- “Import my chats.” Brings the ChatGPT or Claude conversations you pick into your brain.
- “Where was I with the pilot?” Picks a project back up without re-explaining the context, in either assistant.
- “Review this text against my writing guide.” Applies how you write and checks that figures, dates and links come from your material.
MemoryBrain vs each assistant's own memory
They don't compete: you can have all three at once. This is what changes.
| ChatGPT memory | Claude memory | MemoryBrain | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Can the other AI see it? | No | No | Yes, both read the same brain |
| What it keeps | What you ask it to remember and what it learns from your chats | Context from your conversations | What you save, what you read and the chats you import |
| Source of each memory | Not shown | Not shown | Every note keeps its own |
| Taking it with you | View and delete memories | Stays inside Claude | Download everything as one file |
| Setup | None, on by default | None or almost none | Add the connector in each AI |
Where native memory wins: there is nothing to set up and it learns from every chat on its own. Where MemoryBrain wins: it is the same in all your AIs, you know where each thing comes from, and it is yours.
Common problems
The 6-digit code doesn't arrive
Only emails approved for the beta get a code: if yours isn't, the screen looks the same but nothing is sent. Check your spam folder too. Some Outlook and Hotmail accounts are not receiving the email right now: use another address while we fix it.
Claude won't let me add custom connectors
On Team and Enterprise plans only organization owners can add them, and many companies block them. Use a personal account or ask whoever manages yours.
I already have another connector on Claude Free
The Free plan allows a single custom connector. To use MemoryBrain you will need to remove the other one or upgrade.
ChatGPT doesn't use MemoryBrain in the conversation
Call it with @MemoryBrain at the start of your message. If it still doesn't show up, check that the plugin is installed, not just created.
Limits
- It is in private beta.
- We have only tested it in ChatGPT and Claude. Other MCP-compatible clients are not tested yet.
- It doesn't read ChatGPT's or Claude's own memory, or your chats, except the ones you import.
Frequently asked questions
Does MemoryBrain sync with ChatGPT's or Claude's own memory?
No. Each assistant keeps its own memory. MemoryBrain is a separate memory both of them share, and it only holds what you save to it or the chats you choose to import.
Does my computer need to stay on?
No. MemoryBrain runs in the cloud and both assistants connect to it over the internet.
Can I take my data with me?
Yes. From your account you download your whole brain as one file and revoke access for each connected app.
Does it work on Claude's free plan?
According to Anthropic's help center, the Free plan allows one custom connector, so MemoryBrain can be that connector.
