MemoryBrain vs Hjarni
Both give ChatGPT and Claude a memory that lives outside the assistant and connects over MCP. Hjarni is a Markdown notes base that you or your AI write and organize, and it tells you who wrote each note. MemoryBrain keeps where each idea comes from: what you read, with the original words, or what you said.
If you want a place to write and organize notes your AI can read, and you want it today in many clients and on your phone, Hjarni is further along.
The comparison
| Hjarni | MemoryBrain | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | “A hosted Markdown knowledge base with an official MCP server” | A personal memory for ChatGPT and Claude where every note keeps its source |
| Who writes the notes | You in the editor, or your AI when you ask it | Your AI, from a source you choose (an article, a book, your Kindle highlights, a chat). Your own opinion goes in a separate field |
| Where each note comes from | An optional “Source URL” field and a history of who edited it (you, ChatGPT or Claude). The history isn't included in the export | Required: every note belongs to a source (title, author, type, link), and notes from something you read carry the original words |
| Assistant permissions | Full access, per folder, or read-only (since Oct 28, 2026) | Access to your whole brain |
| Links between notes | Two-way wiki links, untyped | Typed links from the verb: contradicts, extends, depends on, exemplifies… |
| Clients | ChatGPT (paid plan, with its own panel in the chat), Claude, Claude Code, Cursor and other MCP clients; apps for iPhone, iPad, Android and Mac | ChatGPT (web) and Claude (web and iPhone), tested. Others untested |
| Official directories | In Claude's; in ChatGPT's, according to Hjarni | Not yet: add it with the URL https://app.memorybrain.ai/mcp |
| Export | Active notes as Markdown in a ZIP, or in Open Knowledge Format | The whole brain as a JSON file (notes are Markdown inside) |
| Price | Free up to 25 notes (and 5 attachments, 20 MB); Pro €11/month or €110/year; teams €18 per seat per month | Private beta, no published price |
| Sign-up | Open | Waitlist |
| Language | Site and docs in English | Spanish and English |
| Teams | Yes, with shared folders | No: it's a personal memory |
Where Hjarni wins
- It works in more places. It has a connector in Claude's directory, its own panel inside ChatGPT, and apps for iPhone, iPad, Android and Mac. For MemoryBrain we only claim what we've tested: ChatGPT and Claude.
- Permissions. You can give your AI access to some folders only, or read-only.
- Email in. Forwarding an email creates a note.
- You can sign up today and you know the price. It has a free plan and published pricing. MemoryBrain is in private beta.
- Real Markdown on export. You get a ZIP of
.mdfiles. Our export is JSON. - Teams. If you want a shared knowledge base, Hjarni has it and MemoryBrain doesn't.
Where MemoryBrain is different
- The source isn't optional. In Hjarni a note can have a source link, and you know whether you or your AI wrote it. In MemoryBrain there's no note without a source, and the source says whether the idea comes from something you read (with the original words), a chat of yours, or something you said.
- The author's idea and your opinion don't mix. The note body is the source's idea; what you add goes in another field. If you save the same source again, your part is kept.
- Links say what the relationship is. “This note contradicts that one” isn't the same as “this note mentions that one”. MemoryBrain reads the verb before each link, with no AI involved. The format is public: Provenance notes.
- It starts from a source, not a blank note. You give it an article, a book, your Kindle highlights or your ChatGPT and Claude chats (you pick which), and your AI pulls out the ideas one by one, with their quote.
- In Spanish too.
When to pick each
- Hjarni, if you want a Markdown notebook your AI reads and writes, in many clients, with a free plan, or for a team.
- MemoryBrain, if you want your AI to remember what you read and what you decide, and tell you where it got it, the same in ChatGPT and Claude.
- Neither, if you use one assistant and it's enough that it remembers a few preferences: its built-in memory already does that. ChatGPT's also shows which memories and chats it used in each answer (since May 2026). What it doesn't keep is what you read outside the chat, with its quote.
- Notion, if you already use it: since November 4, 2026 it works as a shared memory for ChatGPT and Claude, on the free plan too.
