Why does ChatGPT say "Chat memory full" when my memory isn’t full?

“Saved memory full” and “Chat memory full” are different warnings. Users report the second in individual chats, including short ones. OpenAI has not explained its cause. To keep working, take a checked summary into a new chat.

By Carlos Moya. Updated November 8, 2026.

First, tell the two warnings apart

Check the wording of the warning and the state of your saved memory list. Do not assume that deleting memories will resolve a chat warning.

What to do if you need to continue

  1. If you can still send messages, ask for a summary

Do this before switching chats. You can ask:

“Prepare a summary so I can continue in a new chat. Include decisions and their reasons, the current status, the next step and the sources of facts. Flag anything you cannot verify.”

  2. If you cannot send messages, gather what matters

If you can read earlier messages, use the decisions and work status to prepare the summary yourself. Keep a copy outside the chat.

  3. Check the summary and paste it into a new chat

Check that it reflects what you agreed before continuing. This step helps you transfer the work. It is not a confirmed fix for the warning.

What is known and what remains unexplained

The cited OpenAI forum threads are dated October 21 and 25 and November 6, 2026. They are user reports, not an official explanation of the cause.

To avoid depending on a single chat

Keep a document with decisions, their reasons, sources and the next step. You can paste it when starting another conversation. A memory with sources is another way to keep that work outside the chat.

Frequently asked questions

Does deleting memories fix “Chat memory full”?

The cited sources contain no confirmed fix. Deleting memories frees space in saved memory, but does not establish that it resolves the chat warning.

Why does it happen?

OpenAI has not explained the cause as of November 8, 2026. The cited threads contain user reports, not an official explanation.

Do I lose the chat?

The warning does not mean you have deleted the conversation, but it may stop you sending more messages. If you still can, ask for a summary. If you can only read it, prepare the summary from the available messages.
