Does Copilot have memory? How to view, enable and delete it
Yes. Copilot can save preferences and details for later chats. First identify whether you use Copilot with a personal account or Microsoft 365 Copilot. Review memories in Personalization: enabling, disabling and deleting are separate actions.
Identify your Copilot before changing settings
This guide separates the Microsoft Copilot app with a personal account from Microsoft 365 Copilot with a work or school account. Microsoft’s help distinguishes these contexts. If you use Copilot inside Microsoft 365 apps for home, consult its specific help rather than assuming another app’s path applies.
Microsoft dates the new consumer app for web, desktop and mobile to August 18, 2026. Its older help remains available but explicitly says it only applies to the previous version. The consumer steps below apply to the new app.
Copilot with a personal account: view, enable and delete
These steps follow the consumer app controls help.
Open memory controls
Sign in to Microsoft Copilot with your personal Microsoft account. Open Settings › Personalization. Look for Saved memories.
Review and enable what you want to keep
Select Manage next to the toggle to view memories. Turn Saved memories on if you want to allow saving. Try a fictional detail and check the list afterwards; avoid sensitive information as a test.
Delete one memory or all of them
In Manage, use the delete icon beside a memory or Delete all memories to remove them all. To prevent new saving, turn off Saved memories as well. Turning it off does not delete existing memories.
Microsoft 365 Copilot: check your work account
The Copilot Chat memory management help documents this path with a Microsoft 365 account.
Open chat settings
In Copilot Chat, signed in with your Microsoft 365 account, open … Settings and more › Chat settings › Personalization. In the Saved memories tile, select Manage saved memories.
Manage saved memories
The Saved memories toggle controls saving. Turn it on to allow saving or off to stop it. In the management pane, delete an individual memory or use Delete all memories. Turning it off does not automatically delete existing memories here either.
Review other personalization sources
Microsoft distinguishes saved memories from chat history inferences and, for work or school accounts, insights from work content depending on the plan. Also review Chat history or Chat history & work insights if shown. Deleting the saved memory list is not the same as removing all those sources.
If you also want to remove what was learned from history
Copilot Chat’s personalization help says turning off the history control deletes inferences from it and, where applicable, from work content. It warns that turning it back on within 30 days adds those memories back. This is a condition of that Copilot Chat workflow, not a universal instruction for every Copilot version.
Deleting memories and conversation history are separate operations. With a work account, ask your administrator about retention or organization controls if needed. The help also warns that the new Home experience is still rolling out and your screen may differ.
If the setting is missing
Check product, account and app version before following a different path. For work accounts, check the plan and available controls with your administrator. Record the screen name and missing setting for support. A missing menu does not demonstrate that memories were deleted or establish that they can be recovered.
Memory with sources is a separate idea
Keeping the origin of each detail helps you review it. MemoryBrain applies that idea to ChatGPT and Claude, but it is not available inside Copilot. It cannot be used to view or recover Copilot’s memories.
Frequently asked questions
Does turning memory off delete memories?
In the current controls described here, no. Turn off saving and also delete existing memories from the management pane if you want to remove them.
Does deleting memories remove chats?
These are separate controls. Review saved memories, chat history and other personalization sources available in your product separately.
Can I use MemoryBrain in Copilot?
No. MemoryBrain is not available inside Copilot and cannot recover its memories.
