How do I make ChatGPT write like me without drifting back to a generic tone?

Give it texts you wrote, extract a short guide with examples and use it when drafting. Keep the samples with the work and compare each draft against them. A preference stored in memory does not guarantee a consistent voice.

Prepare a reference you can check

  1. Choose your own samples

Collect several real texts of the kind you want to write: emails, articles or proposals. Remove unnecessary private information. Label the date, audience and purpose. Do not use AI output as evidence of your voice or treat quotations from authors you read as your own style.

  2. Extract a few rules, with evidence

Ask for patterns in vocabulary, sentence length, structure and tone. Each rule should point to a passage in your samples. Reject vague labels such as “authentic” unless they explain a concrete choice.

“Analyze these samples I wrote. Propose a short voice guide. For each rule, quote a sentence that supports it and give an example that breaks it. Do not invent traits absent from the samples. Wait for my review before using it as a guide.”

  3. Approve the guide and use it for new writing

Correct rules that do not represent you. Separate voice from the assignment: an incident email may need more detail than a short post. Attach the samples to the work and ask it to consult them before drafting.

  4. Compare and keep useful corrections

Check the draft against the samples: its opening, verbs and unnecessary sentences. Keep your final version and the reason for each reusable correction. Try a different topic in a new chat with the same references; repeatedly correcting one paragraph is not enough.

A short style guide

This invented example shows the format. Replace its rules with patterns you recognize in your writing:

Where to keep each part in ChatGPT

See context, memory, instructions and projects. Our practical recommendation is to keep complete samples as documents and rules as explicit instructions. This makes both reviewable.

How to spot a return to generic tone

“Compare this draft with my approved samples. Identify specific sentences that drift away and the sample you use as a reference. Suggest changes without inventing facts or imitating quotations from other authors. I will choose the final version.”

OpenAI forum thread 1378933 contains a report of lost consistency during collaborative writing. It is a user report, not an established cause or evidence that everyone experiences it. It does not show that deleting memory or changing plans fixes the issue.

Where MemoryBrain fits

MemoryBrain has skills to write, evaluate and improve documents using your notes and voice. Your writing and approved corrections should remain the reference. Keeping their source helps distinguish your voice from reading material or AI suggestions; it does not guarantee consistency. More on memory with sources.

Frequently asked questions

Is asking “write like me” enough?

It is an underspecified request. Provide your own samples and rules you can check against them.

Does memory guarantee my style stays consistent?

No. A stored preference does not demonstrate that it is applied when drafting. Check each draft against your samples.

Can I use AI text as a sample?

You can keep it as a proposal or approved version, but do not label it as your original writing. Preserve that distinction when extracting the guide.
