ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini memory: what does each remember?
All three can use information from past chats, with different settings and limits. ChatGPT combines memories and other sources; Claude saves context by topic and Project; Gemini requires a personal account and activity enabled, and excludes this memory in Gems and Live.
Check which memory you have enabled
Identify the account and space
Note whether you use a personal or organizational account and whether the chat belongs to a Project or Gem. Compare that case with the table before changing settings.
Review the actual controls
Open your account’s memory settings. Inspect saved information using its controls where available. An answer about what it remembers does not replace that review.
Test with a fictional fact
Save a test preference and ask about it in another chat within the same scope. Repeat outside that scope if you want to compare. Then remove the test fact through the service’s controls.

| Aspect | ChatGPT | Claude | Gemini |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it saves or uses | Preferences and context from memories, chats and other available sources. Does not retain everything. | Personal and work context by topic; you can ask it to remember. | Personalization from past chats. |
| Across chats | Yes, depending on memory and chat-history reference settings. | Yes; memory and chat search have separate controls. | Yes, with Memory and Keep Activity enabled. |
| Projects / Gems | Projects: default or project-only memory; the latter excludes outside context. | Memory per project. Can use account memory; turn off Use account memory to separate it. | This past-chat memory is unavailable in Gems or Live chats. A text chat can reference a past Live conversation. |
| View | Settings › Personalization › Memory; summary or saved memories depending on account. | Settings › Your Claude › Manage next to Your memory; older layout: Settings › Memory. | The help suggests asking whether past chats were used and reviewing Gemini Apps Activity. |
| Edit / delete | Correct the summary or saved memory where the control exists. Also review its sources to remove the information. | Edit or delete topics in memory management. Deleting a chat alone does not delete its memories in the new experience. | Correct in chat with Memory enabled. To delete the fact, delete every chat containing it; also disconnect the app if it came from one. |
| Export / import | Data export for eligible accounts. The cited help does not describe restoring memory through an import. | Memory import and export documented; import is experimental and may not incorporate everything. | The cited memory help does not describe exporting or importing memories. |
| Plans and accounts | Features and controls vary by plan, region, platform and workspace. No self-service export in Business, Enterprise or Healthcare. | Memory on Free and paid plans; Team/Enterprise subject to organization controls. Chat search on paid plans. Some organizations use the older experience. | 18 or older, personal account and Keep Activity on. Excludes work, school and supervised accounts. The page does not require a particular paid plan. |
What importing memory means
Claude’s import guide lets you paste information from another assistant and review what was incorporated. This is not continuous synchronization. A ChatGPT data export also does not prove another service will reconstruct its memory exactly.
The absence of import instructions in this Gemini help page does not prove that no other product feature can import data. Importing conversations and rebuilding memory are different tasks.
Choose without relying on a promise of recall
For a lasting preference, test whether it appears in a new chat. For a project, also keep a document with its current state. To delete a fact, review where it was stored: memory, conversations, files or connected apps.
MemoryBrain lets you consult personal memory with sources from ChatGPT and Claude. It does not work inside Gemini today. For continuity between the first two, see how to use the same memory.
Frequently asked questions
Does Gemini remember inside a Gem or Live?
The cited help excludes past-chat memory in Gems and Live chats. It does allow asking from a text chat to reference a past Gemini Live conversation.
Does deleting a chat also delete memory?
It depends on the service and memory type. ChatGPT separates memories and history. Claude says memories must be removed separately in the new experience. Gemini asks you to delete all chats containing the fact and disconnect the app where relevant.
Can I automatically sync all three memories?
The cited help does not document automatic synchronization between all three. Claude’s import transfers information. MemoryBrain connects ChatGPT and Claude, but does not work inside Gemini today.
