How do I correct a memory without ChatGPT creating duplicates?
Find the specific memory in settings. Edit it if your account offers that control; otherwise delete the incorrect entry before saving the corrected version. Review the list and test in a new chat. This is a checking method, not an official fix for duplicates.
Correct one fact at a time
Find the exact entry
Open Settings › Personalization › Memory. Depending on your account, you may see a summary, Manage or Saved memories. OpenAI’s help describes these differences. Look for the fact and other phrases that mean the same thing.
Note the incorrect wording and write one valid version. Fictional example: replace “I live in Valencia” with “I live in Bilbao.” Do not add another permanent explanation yet.
Edit or delete the incorrect memory
If you can edit the memory or summary, correct the fact there. Otherwise use the deletion control for the incorrect entry. Then save the corrected version once, if you want to retain it.
Do not clear all memory to correct a city. Review the entry you are removing before confirming.
Check what remains saved
Return to memory controls. Search for the old and new facts and their paraphrases. If several entries mean the same thing, review each before removing redundant ones.
If your interface only shows a summary, limit your conclusion to what you can inspect. Do not claim to have reviewed every internal record.
Test from a new chat
Ask about the fact without supplying the new answer. Compare the response with settings. If the old fact returns, ask for its source and check whether it remains in a conversation or file.
“Which city do I live in? Say where that fact comes from. If you lack a sufficient source, say so.”
Why another correction request may not be enough
In thread 1397803, a user describes semantic duplicates and corrections that add more persistent information. This is a reported case. It establishes neither a general cause nor an official solution for all duplicates.
This guide’s method seeks an observable result: the incorrect entry has changed or disappeared, and another conversation uses valid information. It has not been tested here on the reader’s account.
If the fact returns after deleting the memory
OpenAI distinguishes a memory from its sources. Deleting the memory does not remove mentions in chats. To remove a fact completely, also review conversations, files and apps containing it. Updates can take time to propagate.
Do not delete a conversation you need just to debug a test. Preserve anything you want to keep first and decide whether you want to correct the fact or remove it from every source.
Keep a brief correction record
- Previous fact: the wording you found.
- Valid version: the text that should remain.
- Change: edited or deleted, with a date.
- Check: what settings show and what the new chat answers.
Keep this record outside the memory you are correcting. That avoids turning the explanation of the problem into another permanent rule.
What MemoryBrain can contribute
A note with a source helps identify the fact you want to review. MemoryBrain does not automatically deduplicate memories or repair ChatGPT’s native memory. Always check which note remains saved before treating the correction as complete.
If a project decision has changed, use the method for separating current state from history.
Frequently asked questions
Does this method guarantee there will be no duplicates?
No. It is a procedure for finding, correcting and checking a fact. The cited thread is a user report and does not establish an official fix.
What if there is no edit button?
Use the deletion control for the incorrect entry and save one corrected version if you want to keep it. Available controls depend on your account and interface.
Is ChatGPT saying it corrected the memory enough?
That is not enough to verify the result. Review memory controls and check the fact from a new chat. If the old version returns, investigate its source.
